Alfred George Hofmann, 86, of Bluffton, South Carolina, died Saturday, March 9, 2024 after a brief illness. Born in New York, New York on October 23, 1937, he was the son of the late George Hofmann and Eliesabetta (Zink) Hofmann.
He is survived by his wife, Cathryn Haverly Hofmann of Bluffton, SC, two children, Erik Hofmann of Marysville, WA; Kristin Wallace and husband Jace of Cambridge Springs, PA; two grandchildren, Laura Wallace and Meredith Wallace; and sister Barbara Katsoff of Yonkers, NY. Alfred was predeceased in death by his former wife, Frandeleine, in 2003, the mother of Erik and Kristin.
Alfred attended New York City public schools and upon graduation from DeWitt Clinton High School enrolled at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC. He graduated with a BS degree in Paper Science & Chemical Engineering in 1960. Prior to and after active duty in the US Army, he had an active technical, production, and management career in the paper and supporting chemical industries until his retirement in 2004. Following retirement, he was involved as a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, the Arts and Historical Association, and several public libraries including the Bluffton branch of the Beaufort County Library. Additionally, he worked as a consultant for the paper industries.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 16th at 11:00 am at the Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 351 Buckwalter Pkwy., Bluffton, SC. A reception will follow at the church. There will be no burial as Alfred’s remains will be cremated and ashes disbursed in accordance with his wishes.
