George Davis, III Obituary

George W. Davis III (Chef)

It is with great sadness that the family of  George W. Davis III, announces his passing on Saturday, March 9, at the age of 56 years old.  An accomplished Chef, caring son, loving brother and loyal friend, George was born on June 23, 1967 in Richmond, Virginia. George was preceded in death by his brother Christopher Lee Davis, father George W. Davis Jr. and mother Betty Gray Davis. George graduated from Benedictine High School in Richmond, VA in 1985. He attended Virginia Commonwealth University and discovered cooking as his true passion. George then studied abroad in Perugia, Italy with the Italian Culinary Federation allowing him to refine his craft. In the  southeastern United States, he became a visionary chef who created unique cuisine  that highlighted regional food, celebrated the low country culture of the Carolinas and reflected his experiences growing up along the Rappahannock River. George served as executive chef in many fine dining restaurants which include the Ballastone Inn and Cha Bella’s (Savannah), Ocean Grille (Hilton Head), Eagles Nest (Daufuskie) and the Melrose Beach Club ( Daufuskie). Early on he opened a restaurant in Folly Beach, SC and was set to open his second restaurant on Daufuskie Island, South Carolina, Jumping Fox, later this spring. During his career he was also the recipient of both the 2010 Volunteers in Medicine choice award and winner of the Bluffton Seafood Festival “ Iron Chef “ competition.

George will be deeply missed by his two brothers, John and Eric, sisters-in-law Cindy and Mandy along with seven nieces and nephews. George will also be remembered by his community of friends, and colleagues who throughout his career were inspired by his passion and creativity for cooking but more importantly moved by his generous and kind spirit.

In lieu of flowers, tributes may be made to either Hospice of Virginia and/or Fr. Adrian Harmening, OSB Scholarship Fund at Benedictine High School in Richmond Virginia.
