Jane Hay Obituary

Jane Hay, enthusiastic crafter, avid-Braves fan, and ruthless backgammon player passed away at 76 on March 2. She was a loving wife, a doting mother, and the second of five children. Born in New York City to Dr. Richard and Edna Cathcart, Jane was raised in Wayne, PA. After graduating nursing school at Methodist Hospital in Philadelphia, she moved to Hilton Head Island in 1979.

Jane’s career led her to Hilton Head Hospital where she would experience some of the most beautiful and tragic moments of her life. It was where she met her lifelong partner and love, Michael. Within these four walls, she brought a daughter into the world, and eventually welcomed her first grandson. While Jane’s life was not defined by her work, she was a dedicated nurse who committed much of her time to compassionate care.

Jane was a woman of faith, guided by her deep connection with God. Her commitment to her nursing career was intertwined with the values of kindness and empathy she drew from her spiritual beliefs. Jane's unwavering love, joy, and support extended not only to her family but also to the community around her, embodying the principles of grace and compassion she held dear.

She and her husband Michael spent 42 years deeply in love, many of which he patiently waited for her — she was on her own time. He chauffeured her to countless social events, fondly referring to this as "Driving Miss Janie". Their enduring love mirrored that of newlyweds, evident in the sparkle in Jane's eyes when Michael entered the room. To love and to cherish; their vows were faithfully upheld. They could never reach a consensus regarding the charred state of the rice on their first date, and she consistently teased him about the '90s mishap when he overpruned the gardenias. Their story is defined by mutual consideration and support. They shared countless loved notes, offered continual encouragement, and were each other's greatest advocates.

Janie had the tenderest of hearts and experienced profound emotion. She was generous with her love and had an enthusiasm for giving. She perfected the art of thoughtfulness and fiercely supported, celebrated, and inspired those in her life. Her greatest joy came from forging meaningful connections with her two grandsons, each relationship marked by a unique and special bond.

Forever a Philly girl, she never failed to indulge in a cheesesteak order. Despite over four decades in the lowcountry, she always found amusement in the southern influence on her grammar. Her expressions, infused with a charming flair, often showcased a whimsical "I gotta get me one of them" attitude. Despite her own critique, Jane had an excellent command of the English language. She LOVED to chit chat and cherished engaging in heartfelt conversation. Meaningful texts, sweet letters, and long phone calls about nothing and everything were her specialty. She served as the family's living encyclopedia, with an unparalleled ability to recall and share family history.

Jane was preceded in death by her parents Dr. Richard and Edna Cathart. She is survived by her husband, Michael, and her daughters, Amanda (Jason Segers) and Ashley (Mitch Mitchell) and her grandsons, Jackson Melton (16) and Jasper Segers (8). In addition, she is survived by her four siblings: Bill (Melinda) Cathcart, Cierra (Randy) Smejkal, Paulette (Greg) Hice, and Richard (Shari) Cathcart, along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She held each one dear to her heart.

Jane Hay's spirit will forever be remembered as a radiant beacon of love, joy, and support, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew her. A celebration of life will occur on April 6th at Grace Community Church at 11 am. Arrangements are being handled by Sauls Funeral Home.
