Leslie “Les” W. Matthews passed away on March 9, 2024 at the age of 77 in Bluffton, South Carolina. Born on November 20, 1946 in Hemingway, South Carolina, Les was known for his generosity and kindness, always placing his family at the forefront of his life.
Les is survived by his devoted wife Lynn of fifty years and sons Joshua Matthews and his wife Jennifer and their children Tanner, Camden and Anderson and Adam Matthews and his wife Erin, and their children Bryson and Heath – all of whom reside in Bluffton, SC. He also leaves behind his brother Michael Finklea, of Charlotte, North Carolina. Les was preceded in death by his parents Woodrow Matthews and Nita Ackerman Matthews and his brother Woodrow “Buster” Finklea.
A proud alumnus of Bynum Elementary School and Winyah High School, Les furthered his education and graduated from the University of South Carolina with a degree in Business Administration. His commitment to service was exemplified through his time in the United States Navy, where he was stationed in Washington, D.C. and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
Following his military service, Les dedicated 30 years to the Veterans Association Regional Office in Columbia, SC, as a rating specialist and unit chief. His passion for building and renovation led him to a successful second career as a licensed contractor, specializing in home remodeling and new construction.
Les was a faithful member of Lebanon Methodist Church in Eastover, SC, where he actively participated on the board and contributed to the church’s renovation project. His hobbies included hunting, fishing and coaching youth baseball. He also volunteered with Habitat for Humanity in Asheville, North Carolina, helping to build homes for those in need.
A Celebration of Life for Les will be held privately for family and close friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests the donations be made in Les’s memory to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation or Lebanon Methodist Church in Eastover, SC.
The family has entrusted Sauls Funeral Home in Bluffton, SC with the arrangements. Les’s life was a testament to his enduring spirit of giving and community, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
