Nancy Rutledge Pogue, 89, of Bluffton, South Carolina died Friday, March 8, 2024 at Benton House of Bluffton.
Nancy, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Winston Rutledge of Louisville, Kentucky was born the 30th of August 1934. A direct descendent of Edward Rutledge and Arthur Middleton (signers of The Declaration of Independence from South Carolina), she was also related to Archibald Rutledge, Poet Laureate of South Carolina (her father's second cousin). After graduation from The Collegiate School in Louisville in 1952, Nancy attended Connecticut College in New London, CT for two years before heading to New York City and a job with the magazine, Life, and its Advertising Dept. In between various jobs in New York, San Francisco and Cincinnati, Nancy began her travels of the world having many new experiences.
In 1964 she married Bill Pogue, a Cincinnati native and heir to the H&S Pogue Department Stores. Between travel, antique collecting and her civic work, having been a member of the Jr. Leagues of Louisville, New York, San Francisco and Cincinnati, she was also a member of The Garden Club of Cincinnati and The Garden Club of America. Throughout her life she was one of those people who stood out in a crowd and was unforgettable.
In 1998 at age 64 she pulled up her Ohio stakes and moved to Bluffton, South Carolina, with her usual enthusiasm.
