Obituary:
Helen R. Dean Ridgeland, SC Helen Rowse Dean, 87, died peacefully Tuesday, September 1, 2009 surrounded by her loved ones at Hospice House of Savannah in Savannah, GA. Helen was born July 15, 1922 to Thomas Watson and Alba Lee Rowse in Sylvania, GA but moved to Statesboro at an early age. She was a graduate of Statesboro High School and Georgia Teachers College, what is now Georgia Southern University. She retired after 26 years of service from South Carolina Department of Social Services where she served as District Director of the seven county, 4th District of SC. She was a founding member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and also served on the original board of directors which oversaw construction and opening of the Jasper County Hospital. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, A. Norris Dean of Ridgeland, SC; two sons, Thomas E. (Perri Ann) Dean and Herbert L. Dean, all of Statesboro, GA; one daughter, Evelyn (Greg) Freeman of Ridgeland, SC; one sister, Catherine Brown of Bartlesville, OK and two grandchildren, Dean Paul Freeman and Elizabeth Sterling Morris. She was predeceased by her sister, Betty Rowse Sheppard and her daughter, Eleanor Dean Hoover. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church., 696 S. Jacob Smart Blvd., Ridgeland SC at 12:00 noon on Friday, September 4, 2009 with burial in Grahamville Cemetery. The family will receive friends at St. Anthony’s social hall from 10:30 am until the hour of service at 12:00 noon. Flowers will be accepted and memorial donations may be made to St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, PO Box 548, Ridgeland, SC 29936, Hospice House of Savannah, PO Box 131902, Savannah, GA 31416 or charity of choice.
