John Martin Dwyer, age 74, of Bluffton, SC and formerly of Manhattan, NY died Thursday, February 14, 2019 at Roper Hospice Cottage in Mt. Pleasant, SC.
Mr. Dwyer was born on February 28, 1944 in New York City, NY, the son of the late Thomas and Alice Coyle Dwyer. He was a graduate of St. John’s University where he earned a degree in accounting. While at St. John’s he organized and was a founder of the school’s football program. Following his formal education he served in the United States Army and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. Recently, John was interviewed about his Vietnam War experiences and that recording has been archived at the Library of Congress. After his military tenure he returned to New York where he was a successful restaurateur, owning several Irish pubs in New York City. He served as Chairman of the Board for two Off Broadway Theatre Companies, Manhattan Punch Line and Theatre Sports. For over 25 years John worked with Nu Skin Enterprises and had reached the pinnacle level of Team Elite. While living in Sun City “Scoop” was active with the Sun City Softball Team where he played first base and was also Past President of the Sun City Republican Club.
Mr. Dwyer is survived by his loving wife, Patricia; and brothers, Thomas Dwyer (JoAnna) and Brian Dwyer (Elaine); niece, Alison (Fergus); nephew, Sean (Ezra); cousins; and a host of extended family.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Monday, February 25, 2019 at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 31 Saint Gregory Drive, Bluffton, SC 29909. The family will be receiving friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
