June Elaine Silverman

June Silverman was and lived as a “giver,” finding her greatest rewards in helping others.  As a resident of Royal Oak and then Detroit, MI for over 62 years, she managed the offices of Dr. Elmer Mueller where she was loved by patients and colleagues alike for her work ethic, kindness and compassion.  Upon her move to Hilton Head in 1993 she again followed her heart and drive to help others by volunteering at the Hilton Head Island Auxiliary gift shop at the Hilton Head Island Hospital.  As the pro-bono buyer and manager of the gift shop for almost 11 years, she created a “boutique-like” experience which was favorably compared to local stores such as Markel’s in Bluffton.  She also served as President of the Auxiliary in Bluffton for one year. 

June was the matriarch of a loving family.  The parent of three successful children, Carol Mechanic who served as a Senior Vice President of Showtime, Dan Whitener, a leader in sales at Sysco Foodservice Co. and Dr. Susan Cramer a prominent Physiatrist in Bluffton and adored by her 4 grandchildren and her first great-grand child, she took great pride in not only raising them but also in helping each become leaders in the industries of their choice. All of her grandchildren in particular loved spending time with her.  They made it a point to visit her and her husband, Larry, as often as possible and loved her deeply.

June had a special flair for interior design which was reflected in the beautiful homes in which she lived—first in Hilton Head Plantation, followed by Bluffton, SC.  She was an avid gardener and enjoyed designing and planting a beautiful, color-filled oasis.  She loved making houses into homes for her ever growing family to enjoy.

Mrs. Silverman is pre-deceased by her parents Norvel and Anna Douglas and sisters Ilene Ackerman and Gerry Douglas.

Married for 53 years, she is survived by her husband, retired Judge Lawrence Silverman of Bluffton, SC who served for 20 years on the Wayne County (MI) Circuit Court, Criminal Division.  She is also survived by daughters Carol Mechanic (Bill) of Los Angeles, CA and Dr. Susan Cramer (Rick) of Bluffton, SC and son Dan Whitener (Christine) of White Lake, MI; grandchildren Eric Whitener (Emily) of Ft. Myers, FL, Caron Whitener of Berkley, MI, Erin Mechanic of Los Angeles, CA and Megan Cramer of Bluffton, SC.  Last, she is survived by her first great-grandchild and namesake, June Whitener of Ft. Myers, FL.

A memorial service will be held at Sauls Funeral Home in Bluffton, SC on Friday, September 7, 2018 at 2PM. The family will be receiving friends from 1:00 PM until the time of the service at the funeral home.
