Lois Burlingham Shumway

Lois Burlingham Shumway passed from this life peacefully into the care of a loving God on Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at her home in Bluffton, SC. She was born on January 9, 1952 in Norwich CT to George T. Burlingham and Shirley Mellor Burlingham and grew up in Lisbon, CT.

She was a graduate of Norwich Free Academy and took college courses while at NFA. She worked in administration at Waterford Country School after graduation and then moved to Vermont where she excelled at HR management at the Experiment in International Living, and Vermont National Bank. She later moved to NH and was HR and Accounting Manager for Tidland Corporation in Keene, NH. She and her husband Peter Shumway semi-retired in 2002 and moved to Hilton Head Island where she became Controller at Sunset Rentals of Hilton Head Island for 15 years.

Lois' ability to engage others kindly and thoughtfully made everyone she met feel her empathy and caring for them. She was sensitive, insightful, compassionate, and had a ready and wonderful sense of humor which made all those she met immediately comfortable to share with her and respond to her giving nature. Beloved by those who knew her, her joy was making others happy.

She adored her family and was dubbed “The Perfect Aunt” by her relatives and those she “adopted” as nieces and nephews, who were many.

She blessed Peter Shumway by marrying him at the Dummerston Center Church, Vermont on June 4, 1977, and their deep love and devotion to each other continues.

She is survived by her Mother, Shirley Burlingham; Uncle, Arthur Mellor; Sister. June LeClair, (Roger); Niece, Tracy Snyder, (Brian), Grandnieces Paige Snyder Warner and Taylor Snyder, and many close cousins.

There will be no service per her wishes. Donations may be made to The Salvation Army in her memory.
