Bob was born and raised in Washington, NJ attending Public School. He was the son of William and Jane (Stickle) Conant. He graduated from Massanutten Military Academy, served 4 years in the US Navy raising to the rank of Aerial and Motion Picture Photographer Petty Officer First Class. He studied Engineering at Lafayette College, Business at George Washington University, and graduated from the University of Virginia in 1945 with a BS in Chemistry. He was President of his Fraternity, Alpha Chi Sigma. He then joined Dow Chemical Company for his entire career holding various management positions in sales, marketing, and marketing research.
Bob was an active skin diver and enjoyed sailing, skiing, reading, history, photography and genealogy.
Bob married his wife of 73 years Joan Evans in Washington, DC on June 10, 1950. He served as Advisor to Junior Achievement and served as Deacon and Elder of the Presbyterian Church. He was Trustee on the Board of the Presbyterian Foundation. He served on the Presbyterian Church for Northern Ireland Committee, and Co-Chaired Presbyterians for Democracy. Bob worked with United Way, and loved working on the Board of Pure Water for the World giving many talks to Rotary Clubs and other organizations learning to use bio-sand water filters in developing countries. He was honored by MOLIFE of Massachusetts being named Paul Harris Man of the Year by Rotary for his work helping families to have safe, clean water in Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Guatemala. He worked with high school students in Honduras on the prevention of HIV-Aids. He was instrumental in helping develop a sister congregation for Memorial Presbyterian Church of Midland Michigan in Costa Rica and worked helping abandoned children in Brazil. He was a 50-year member of the American Chemical Society and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.
Spending his early professional life in Midland, Michigan, Bob lived with his family in New Jersey, Buenos Aires, Cape Cod and Atlanta before residing in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
Bob is survived by his wife Joan Evans Conant, children Charlotte (Jay) Kulkin, William (Miguel) Conant, Roger (Diana) Conant, Jane (Wayne) Weinstein, 11 Grandchildren and 20 Great Grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am, Tuesday, August 8, 2023 at Beaufort National Cemetery, Beaufort, SC.
