Alfred J. Mayerhoff

Alfred J. Mayerhoff, 78, Beloved Husband, Father, and Grandfather passed away on Saturday, January 25, 2014. He is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Eloise, his sons Alfred G. and Douglas J., his grandchildren, Bradley and Tyler Mayerhoff and Michael Elberfeld, brother Joseph, his daughter-in-law Mary Catherine, son-in-law, Peter Elberfeld, mother-in-law, Hazel Nicholls. He was preceded in death by his daughter Lisa, his brother Henry and sister Mary Ann Magee. Mr. Mayerhoff, son of Anna and Henry Mayerhoff, was born and raised in Staten Island, New York. He served two years in the U.S. Army after high school. He then joined the New York City Fire Department where he rose to the rank of Battalion Chief. He retired after 36 years of meritorious service and moved to Hilton Head in 1998. He enjoyed golf and tennis and loved to travel. A mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Francis by the Sea Catholic Church, 45 Beach City Road, Hilton Head Island, SC at 10:30 a.m., Friday, January 31, 2014. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the The New York Firefighters Burn Center Foundation, 21 Asch Loop, Bronx, New York 10475 or to Tidewater Hospice Foundation, 10 Buckingham Plantation Drive, Suite A, Bluffton, SC 29910. Sauls Funeral Home of Bluffton is assisting the family with their arrangements.
