Angelos “Ang” Zaloumis, beloved husband, father, grandfather, engineer, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2026, at the age of 94.
Born on August 29, 1931, in the Bronx, New York, Ang was the only child of Greek immigrant parents. He began school speaking no English, yet through determination and intelligence graduated at the remarkable age of 16. Growing up in a rough neighborhood shaped his resilience and character, but one life-changing experience came when his mother sent him to spend a summer with his Uncle Johnny in South Africa. During the long ship voyages to and from Africa, Ang befriended the crew and discovered a fascination with maritime engineering that would define his career.
Ang graduated from the Merchant Marine College at Fort Schuyler, New York, and went on to build a distinguished career with the Department of the Navy specializing in sound and vibration engineering. Known for his sharp mind and problem-solving abilities, he and his team tackled some of the Navy’s most complex technical challenges. One of the proudest moments of his career came in 1984, when he accepted the Secretary of Defense Award for Productivity Excellence from Caspar Weinberger after his team developed a solution to a critical submarine propeller issue that saved U.S. taxpayers nearly $29 million. He also received recognition from President George H. W. Bush for his contributions and service.
Ang spent most of his life in Fairfax, Virginia, with his beloved wife, Mary Ann (Nicholson), who predeceased him in August 2025. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, friendship, and community. Proud of their Greek heritage, Ang and Mary Ann were founding members of St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church in Falls Church, Virginia. Ang was also an active member of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA).
Ang was a devoted father to Christy (Brian) and George (Elsa), and a proud grandfather to Dennis (Katy), Mary Grace, and Angelos. Nothing brought him greater joy than his family and sharing stories, laughter, and traditions with them.
An avid golfer, Ang’s love of the game began when Mary Ann bought him a set of golf clubs simply to encourage him to get out of the house. Golf soon became one of his lifelong passions, and for nearly 50 years he enjoyed the camaraderie and friendships he built at the Country Club of Fairfax. He was also well known and fondly remembered cruising around town in his treasured 1971 Cadillac convertible.
In 2023, Ang and Mary Ann relocated to Bluffton, South Carolina, to be closer to their daughter.
Ang will be remembered for his intelligence, humor, loyalty, deep pride in his heritage, and unwavering dedication to family and country. His life was one of achievement, service, and enduring love.
Private services will be held by the family.
