Arthur George Benzle, age 100, of Hilton Head, SC passed away peacefully in his sleep at 11:30 PM on Friday, June 19, 2019. Arthur was born in Lakewood, Ohio on April 26, 1919 to parents Arthur and Margaret Benzle. He is survived by his 5 children, 14 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
Arthur met his wife, Martha Munhull, in 1938 and married her in 1945. They were married for 68 years before her death in 2013. He often reflects that, “the day he met Martha was the luckiest day of his life.”
His work life officially launched in 1940 as a secretary in a produce brokerage business in Cleveland, Ohio. In eight short years he was a junior partner and partial owner of the company, renamed AG Benzle & Son. After selling his produce business in 1973, he retired to Hilton Head SC. Becoming restless with retirement, he became a starter and caddy master at the Harbor Town Golf Course. From 1990-2002 he was the pro-am chairman for the Heritage Golf Tournament. He and some of his golfing friends also started the Hilton Head Senior Men’s Golf Association.
Arthur had a passion for travel inspiring him in 2014 to write and publish his book, Times Traveled, about his adventures traveling throughout the United States and the world. He traveled with family and friends to 66 countries and all 50 states. His last trip abroad was to Bermuda at age 99. Despite all of his travels abroad, Arthur still calls the Untied States his favorite country because of its freedoms, beauty, and diversity.
He credited his longevity to, “good genes, a lot of sleep, exercise and following doctor’s orders.
