Barbara J. Alderman Guter

Barbara J. Alderman Guter, 81, of Hampton Circle, Bluffton, passed to her heavenly reward on Tuesday, April 12, 2022.

Born June 12, 1940, in Eccles, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Eugene and Louise Alderman.

Barb spent her childhood in Beckley, WV, and attended Woodrow Wilson High School. She moved to Charleston, WV in 1958 and began her career as a bookkeeper in the auto industry.

In December 1960 she married Richard Joseph Guter then a Lt. JG in the U.S. Navy. They were married at St. Agnes Church in Charleston, WV. Soon after, they moved to Whidbey Island, WA for a naval assignment which launched 20 years of living as a military family. Barb and Dick lived and loved each other in California, Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, Taiwan, and New Jersey. After moving to New Jersey, Barb re-engaged her career as a bookkeeper working for several small business in the area. She and her husband moved to Sun City in Bluffton in 2000.

Barb enjoyed the privilege of being a wife, mom, daughter, sister, aunt, grandma, and friend. She was the consummate hostess, sports team mom, band/drama club mom, and confidant to many. Friends of her children remember feeling like part of the family whenever they came to the house. She loved square dancing, playing bridge, crafting, and a special gift—sending cards to people throughout the course of her life to acknowledge significant milestones in the lives of others. In retirement, she and Dick enjoyed traveling to places near and far, and very frequently to see their siblings, children, and grandchildren. Barb and Dick were early parishioners of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church and Barb served with several ministries, including the parish’s vocations committee.

Barb was pre-deceased by her nephew Jeff Tangeman (2015), husband Dick (2016), brother Robert Alderman (2017), and daughter-in-love Jessica Guter (2018). She is survived by her siblings, Daniel P. Alderman (Mary Lou) of Jacksonville, FL, and Victoria “Vicky” L. Alderman of Bluffton; her sisters-in-love Suzanne Tangeman of Sikeston, MO and Barbara Goeztman of Nashville, TN; her children: Kristen Fyfe-Mills (Doug Mills) of Alexandria, VA, Richard E. Guter of Denver, CO, and Timothy P. Guter of New Bern, NC; and her grandchildren Kayla and Trevor Fyfe, and Jacob, Joshua, and Meghan Guter; four nieces and two nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church in Bluffton at 10:30 am, April 25, 2022. Family will receive visitors an hour prior to Mass at the church and there will be a repast meal served at St. Gregory’s Parish Hall following the funeral and internment.
