Barbara T. Thompson, 92, of Hilton Head passed away on June 15, 2026. She was born on September 10, 1933 in Bronxville, NY to Jane Alston Telfer Thomas and Kenneth Roberts Telfer and spent her early life there. Her early professional career was spent working in Manhattan, first as Merchandising Editor for Conde Nast's Vogue Magazine, and later in the real estate field with Whitbread Nolan selling condominiums and townhomes. She moved to Hilton Head with her now deceased husband, Gerard Thompson, in 1981 and in 1984 reactivated her career as a realtor for Sea Pines Real Estate, soon becoming a Lifetime Member of the Distinguished Sales Achievement Club. In her retirement years she volunteered her time at Hilton Head’s Coastal History Museum.
She was the consummate lady, a devoted friend, generous, kind, and always supportive to those who knew her. She worked diligently for each and every client, never pushy, and always fair. She will be remembered for her sense of humor, her bright resilience, her love for a good meal, a great movie, or a fun excursion. She worked diligently at staying healthy, including workouts at the Sea Pines Country Club until late last year. She was always up on the latest news and enjoyed lively political discussions.
Barbara is survived by her immediate family, a sister, Deborah Hulbert, a niece, Kate Hulbert, and a nephew, Kimball Hulbert, all of New York. She also has four surviving stepchildren, Gerard Thompson, Jr., Phillip Thompson, Melanie Fauchet, and Bethlyn Proft, from whom she was grandmother to twenty-five and great-grandmother to two.
She will be remembered with love and gratitude by all who were fortunate enough to know her. A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 A.M. on June 25th at Providence Presbyterian Church, 171 Cardillo Parkway, Hilton Head Island, with a reception for family, friends, and colleagues at 12:00 P.M. at Sea Pines Country Club.
Family will attend her burial at Fairview Cemetery in Warrenton, North Carolina.
In lieu of flowers please offer donations to the Tunnel to Towers or the Alzheimer’s Association organizations.
