On April 11, 2012 with dignity and grace, and on her own schedule, she passed on to eternal peace. She attended public schools in Cairo, and then graduated from Florida State University and the University of Florida with a Master's Degree in Education. She earned a second Master's in Mathematics from the University of South Carolina. Mrs. Hughes taught in public schools in Florida and in Ridgeland, South Carolina for over 30 years.Wishing to enlist after Pearl Harbor during World War II, she chose the Marine Corps, since that was the only branch that would allow her to enlist at the age of 20. She married her childhood boyfriend, Wayne Walker Hughes, in 1948 and they enjoyed a loving marriage until Wayne's untimely death at age 55. Mrs. Hughes is survived by two sons, Tom (Nanette) Hughes and Bob (Anne Starr) Hughes, one granddaughter Jessica (Jarrott) Goodman, two sisters, Lois Commander and Dot Fann and many nieces and nephews.Always an adventurous soul, Mrs. Hughes traveled and explored the United States with her husband Wayne, also an educator, and her sons during the summer when school was out. Later in retirement she continued to travel and explore, expanding her adventures to Europe and Asia. With a jig saw puzzle on the table, Blanche was always ready for a board game and she played a mean hand of bridge. A lady of diverse interests, she loved to paint, play golf, quilt, canoe, walk and listen to the adventures of others. She was a faithful member of St. Paul
