Brenda Joyce (Harper) Meeks

Brenda Joyce Harper Meeks, age 76, widow of John Monroe Meeks Sr. passed away on August 23, 2019 at the Ridgeland Nursing Center.

Joyce was born in Hardeeville, SC on July 10, 1943 to the late John William Harper and Ella Belle Roach Harper Edwards.

Joyce was active in the Hardeeville community where she drove a School bus; was one of the founders of Dixie Youth Baseball and was an avid softball player/Pitcher.  Joyce was a member and chairperson of the Hardeeville Election Commission and served on the Jasper County Election Commission for many years. Joyce was the Grand Marshall of the Catfish Festival Parade in 2012 and was recognized with “ Joyce Meeks Day by the Town of Hardeeville for community service.  Joyce was a faithful member at the Maye River Baptist Church.

Joyce was employed by Dr. Hector Esquivel in Hardeeville and Ridgeland for many years but her joy was raising her children.

She leaves her son, John M. ’Rocky’ Meeks (Ann) of Wilmington Island, GA; her daughters, Brenda Sanchez (John), Kim Powell (Roy) and Bonnie Reyna (Josh) all of Hardeeville, SC and Connie Turlington (Stan) of Bluffton, SC; her brother, J. W. Harper (Dell) of Hardeeville, SC; her sisters, VarnNeice Rollins of Hardeeville, Patricia Wheeler of Summerville, SC ; eighteen grandchildren, Mandy, Brittany, Amanda, James, Joy, Amber, Natalie, Johnny, Taylor, Ryan, Brooke, Trey, Alexander, Andrew, Harper, Chastity, Brandi and Lindsey and twenty great grandchildren. Joyce was predeceased by her husband, John Monroe Meeks, Sr.;  her brother, Harry Harper Sr. and her sister, Alma Busby.

The family will receive friends beginning at 4:00 pm, Monday, August 26, 2019 at the Creative Church, Hardeeville until the hour of the funeral service at 5:00 pm.  Burial will follow at the Maye River Baptist Church Cemetery, Bluffton.
