C. Richard Moulton, 91, of Bluffton, SC, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 7, 2016. He had been a resident at Veterans Victory House in Walterboro, SC, for the past 15 months. Dick was born in 1925 in Newport, VT. He moved to Beverly, MA, during the Depression Era and enlisted in the US Army at 18. WWII was his war and he fought bravely. Many of his experiences influenced his later path through life. He manned a machine gun in the Battle of the Bulge, was among the first soldiers to push across into Germany, and was hit by a mortar shell in Erpigny, Belgium. For this, he was awarded the Purple Heart. Following World War II, he graduated from the University of Vermont and began a life-long career in the insurance industry, beginning with Liberty Mutual and eventually retiring from the Drake, Swan, and Crocker Insurance Agency in Orleans, MA. During the many years he and his wife lived in Brewster on Cape Cod, he was active in numerous community-related organizations, including being chairman of the Brewster Planning Board. He was also a President of the Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow, awarded him by this organization. He and his wife moved to Sun City in Bluffton in 2004. Here, he also busied himself with several of the community’s organizations. Dick had a great sense of humor and could lead a Rotary Club meeting or a conga line with a big smile on his face. He loved life, Cape Cod, and was an enthusiastic follower of the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. He was also proud to be a native Vermonter. He was certainly part of the greatest generation. His wife of 47 years, Suzanne, survives him. He also leaves three children: Jonathan (Melinda) of No. Reading, MA; Helyn (Lyn) of Laguna Niguel, CA; and Kevin (Paula) of Charlotte, NC. He was predeceased by his oldest child, Dorothy (Dee) and his first wife, Elizabeth. Survivors also include 4 granddaughters and a grandson: Renee Sills, Tara Shoemaker, Ashley Vachon (Josh), Kristen Moulton, and Finnegan Moulton. He has also left behind two nephews and a niece. The family would like to thank the staff of Veterans Victory House and Patriot Hospice for their loving and compassionate care in Dick’s final days. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 18, at the Lodge at Riverbend in Sun City, Bluffton, SC, from 10:30-1:30. Those wishing to attend may acquire a guest pass from the guard gate entering Riverbend on Rt. 170.
