Carl T. Butzbach III, of Bluffton, SC, formerly of Southbury, CT, passed away on November 25th surrounded by his loving family.
He was born July 4, 1945, in Paterson, NJ, to the late Carl Theodore Butzbach Jr. and Elizabeth (Leimbacher) Butzbach. He was raised in Clifton, NJ and graduated from Clifton High School in 1962 at the age of 16. Carl joined the Coast Guard shortly after turning 17 in July of that same year. After serving 5 years in the Coast Guard, finishing his career on an ice breaker covering the North and South Pole, Carl attended the International Institute Computer School (where he met his future wife) and graduated in 1968. After a successful career in Computer Science that spanned over 30 years, Carl worked in the Trumbull Tax Assessor’s office until he retired in 2007.
Carl is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Roberta (Bobbi) (Molhoek) Butzbach. Carl and Bobbi married on July 26, 1969, in Wayne, NJ. He leaves behind a proud legacy through his two children and their spouses Robyn Beaudoin and her husband Bob of Bristol, CT and son Christopher and his wife Susan, of Hanover, MA and his four grandchildren: Emma, Colten, Ryan, and Kelsey. He is also survived by his loving sister, Susan Rissmiller and her husband Alan of Toms River, NJ.
Carl spent 33 wonderful years in Southbury, where he was a member of the United Church of Christ and became a life member of the Southbury Volunteer Firemen’s Association. You could always count on Carl attending his children’s sporting events whether it be coaching, volunteering or simply cheering them on. In 2011, Carl and Bobbi moved to Sun City Hilton Head where he enjoyed many clubs and spending time with close friends.
Carl and Bobbi shared a deep love for traveling together and created many lasting memories. Family vacations to Lake Winnipesaukee in the summer, trips to Grand Caymen and St. Croix, and the unforgettable road trip across the Western United States with their children were just a few. Carl and Bobbi also loved their annual cruises, especially enjoying Alaska, Australia, Hawaii, Tahiti and Bora Bora.
Carl and Bobbi spent 14 summers at their cottage in Westerly, RI with family and friends. He absolutely loved fishing with his friends and grandchildren and would fish on any body of water he could find, even continuing to fish after his cancer diagnosis in 2021. Carl was also a lifelong Giants fan (New York and San Francisco), as well as the New York Rangers. When it was time to wind down, Carl would read for hours at a time, often finishing a book in a day or two.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the United Church of Christ, 283 Main Street N, Southbury, CT on Saturday, December 27 at 11:00.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in Carl’s memory to Friends of Caroline, 329 Friends Lane, Ridgeland, SC 29936 or to Tunnel to Towers Foundation online at https://t2t.org/donate/, causes close to the family’s heart.
