Carl Munzig of Bluffton, South Carolina retired retail business executive, passed away Thursday, April 9, 2020 at the age of 90.
Carl was born in Redlands, California on December 5, 1929, a third generation Californian. He graduated from Redlands High School, later achieving a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management from San Diego State.
He served in the U.S. Army Military Police Corp during the Korean Conflict. After his military service he married and started a family. After graduating from San Diego State, he began a retail career as a buyer for San Diego’s Marston’s Department Store. During his thirty years in retail management, he held key positions with some of the nation’s major retail corporations (Montgomery Ward, May Company, Levitz, Global Associates) as a Personnel Manager, Operations Manager, Merchandise Manager, Branch Manager, and multi-store General Manager. In 1982, Carl left the corporate world to become an Independent Business Consultant advising managers and owners how to improve sales, profit, and business performance.
Carl is survived by his wife of forty-six years, Nancy Munzig, RN, MSN, and daughter, Helen Skylar, RN, who lives in San Diego. Carl had two sons by a previous marriage, David Munzig and Scott Munzig, both of whom are pre-deceased. Nancy (who has family in Charleston) and Carl retired to South Carolina in 1998.
Carl has asked to be cremated and placed in Beaufort National Cemetery. A memorial service will be held privately. For those who wish to remember Carl, in lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Hospice Care of the Lowcountry, who provided support during his final days.
