Carol Barnitt

February 17, 1942 — September 25, 2024

Carol Janet Barnitt of Bluffton, SC, passed away on September 25, 2024. Carol will be greatly missed as she was a wonderful wife of 59 years and devoted mother and grandmother.

Carol was born on February 17, 1942, in Montclair, NJ to Robert and Mary Henning of Fairfield, NJ.

Carol attended Grover Cleveland High School in Caldwell, and William Patterson University. She attended Clinton Methodist Church and taught Sunday School. She was employed by Crucible Steel in West Caldwell, NJ.

In 1965, she married Allan and moved to RI. Carol worked at the University of Rhode Island, and taught at St. Vincent de Paul elementary school in Coventry. Later she taught at Oakham Center School in Oakham, MA, and finally retired as a Librarian at Assumption University, Worcester, MA.

Carol pursued many interests including camping, hiking, skiing, fishing, boating, and world travel. She and her family camped in most of the National Parks in the U.S. and Canada and in, later years, she and Allan visited over 40 countries.

Carol is survived by her husband, son Robb Barnitt and wife Miranda, daughter Alissa Smith and husband Steven, and five grandchildren: Ellery and Tessa Barnitt, and Clara, Ivy, and Phoebe Smith.

Christian memorial services will be conducted at Oakham Congregational Church, and at interment in New Jersey.

Contributions in memory of Carol can be made to Parkinson’s Research Foundation, Children International, The Nature Conservatory, or to the Oakham Congregational Church.
