Carol Jan Humphrey was born January 12, 1948 in Denver, CO to Bill and Shirley Lee. The family was rounded out the following year with the birth of her sister, Wendy Kay Lee. She attended Denver public schools and graduated from South High in 1966. University of Denver was a brief stop for her. In a work environment she chose to be recognized as “CJ” to distinguish her from other “Carols” in the office. It would stick for a lifetime. While work and friends were meaningful for Carol, she liked to escape Denver winters. Hilton Head Island became a favorite escape. Ultimately, she would decide to move there in 1981 even though she knew only one person. Because of her investment in the community, she was soon a well-known presence on the island. CJ served as president of the Board of Directors of the Boys and Girls club, overseeing four advisory boards for 6 clubs in Beaufort and Jasper counties. She guided the organization through challenging economic conditions of 2008-09 and was able to trim expenses and increase revenue resulting in expanded programs. CJ served as the office manager of Carson Realty for a number of years and worked as an executive assistant for developers of Belfair, Berkeley Hall and Hampton Hall. CJ had broad interests in community activities. She would organize and promote events for the local orchestra, community theater and served as a volunteer for local golf tournaments. Golfing was a personal interest which she shared with Lonnie Terrell Humphrey. They met at the Crazy Crab where he worked and would eventually marry on November 17, 2000. CJ became involved in the life of All Saints Episcopal Church and was a regular part of the Saturday evening worship time. She was an avid reader. Her couch and living room table had stacks of books she had read or was working on. Among them were several devotional classics. CJ was a good friend to many and loved being with people The last four years were tough. Both she and Lonnie contracted Covid. Lonnie died from kidney complications at that time. She, developed cellulitis, broke her hip in a fall, did a stint of rehab, struggled with Afib and other heart issues, fell again and fractured her pelvis and after another stint of rehab had a serious stroke this last March. Ultimately her weakened body failed her on March 30, 2025. A memorial service will be held at All Saints Church on May 16 at 1PM. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to Boys and Girls Club of Hilton Head Island. CJ is survived by her sister, Wendy Parker of Eugene, OR and her family and by several cousins across the country.
