Caroline F. Sturgis

Caroline Frances Sturgis (MacNeil), 75, of Bluffton, South Carolina, died  peacefully on January 16, 2021.  She was born June 10, 1945, in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, to Colin and Margaret MacNeil.  She is survived by her husband of 54 years Arthur Hugh Sturgis, her sons Andrew Colin Sturgis of Shrewsbury, Masssachusetts, his daughter Kenna, and Ian Hardy Sturgis (wife Chloe) of Nashville, Tennessee, as well as her sisters Greta MacDonald of Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Lorraine Colton (husband David) of Lowell, Massachusetts, and brothers Roy MacNeil (wife Nora) of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia and Alvin MacNeil, deceased, (wife Glenda) of Antigonish, Nova Scotia.

Throughout her life, Caroline loved the study and celebration of her Scottish heritage.  She became a talented award winning Scottish Country dancer and teacher.  She was part of a group of Nova Scotia dancers who performed traditional Scottish dances at the UK Commonwealth Games in the early 1960's.  During her married years she, and her husband Arthur, resided in Arlington, Virginia, Hudson, Ayer, and Westborough, Massachusetts,  Bluffton, South Carolina, as well as St. Andrews, New Brunswick, Canada.

Caroline earned  a college degree and nursing RN license in 1990 specializing in hospice care.  She became a highly skilled and empathetic caregiver helping families deal with multiple end of life issues.  The care she provided to others during that period has been richly returned to her late in life by both Compassus Hospice and Agape Hospice located in the SC lowcountry.  In addition, her family is most grateful for the consistently excellent care she received at the Benton House of Bluffton, SC.

Caroline exhibited considerable grace and dignity during her final years fighting Alzheimers Disease.  She will be greatly missed by her family and all those who knew her well.  Go in peace my Bonnie Lassie.
