Catherine R. McCoy

Catherine Rose McCoy, 71, of Bluffton, SC passed away Monday, December 8, 2025 at her home.

Cathy was born January 15, 1954 in Dexter, MI to the late Charles R. Van Aken and Rosemary Matthews Van Aken. She graduated from Dexter High School and received a Bachelor’s Degree from Eastern Michigan University. She then began her lifelong career as a Certified Public Accountant.

In 1998, Cathy met the love of her life, Mark McCoy, in Maryland. He a dance instructor and she an eager student. They married just a year later, on May 22, 1999. They spent their years together traveling (60 countries to be exact), experiencing nature all across the world and accumulating a bird life-list of 1720 species and trip photos that number in the tens of thousands.

A love of history took them to many countries of Europe. Christmastime being a special time for Cathy, many of those countries were experienced in December. Whether arriving by river boat or bus, cities and towns were explored down to the last alleyway. She also spent many days on the golf course, nurturing her love of the game.

Cathy retired as Director of Audit in 2012 and together, she and Mark moved to Bluffton, SC.

In addition to her husband, Cathy is survived by her brother, Thomas Van Aken and her niece, Jessica Van Aken, both of NJ.

The family will receive friends beginning at 10:00 am until 12:00 noon, Tuesday, December 16, 2025 at Sauls Funeral Home, 90 Simmonsville Rd., Bluffton.
