Charles Edwin (Ed) Smith, 86, of Sun City died on March 30, 2015. Born in Columbus, Ohio on August 15, 1928 and raised in Reading, PA, he was an active child, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout and Asst. Scoutmaster. He attended East Stroudsburg University, graduated from The Ohio State University in 1950, and later earned a Masters from the University of Michigan.
A Korean War veteran, Ed spent 2 years in the US Army serving in Korea and Japan. After discharge he began a 38 year career as a teacher and coach in Allen Park, MI. Over the years Ed coached swimming, track, basketball and football, taught first aid and water safety. His 26 swim teams won over 70% of their meets and numerous championships.
Ed was active in his community of Trenton, MI serving as Youth Committee Chair and Exchange Club President. An outdoor person he loved camping, canoeing and nature. His interest in scouting led him to serve as Scout Master, District Commissioner, and Camp Director. He was awarded scouting's District Award of Merit and The Silver Beaver Award.
An active church member, while a member of Central Woodward Christian Church, Troy MI he served on several committees, including chairman of the building committee, elder and President of the congregation.
A lifelong Buckeye fan, he retired to Columbus Ohio in 1991 and moved to Sun City South Carolina in 2011.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years Patricia Smith. Ed leaves his wife Karen, two sons Dana (Denise) of Cranberry Twp PA and Bradley (Julie) of Granville OH, 6 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters Virgene Heckman of Dublin OH and Vivian Rutz of Waynesboro PA.
A memorial service will take place on Wednesday April 8 at 2:00 pm at Lowcountry Presbyterian Church, 10 Simmonsville Rd, Bluffton SC. Interment at Lowcountry Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make contributions to Boy Scouts of America, the Red Cross or Hospice Care of the Lowcountry.
