Connie Jean (Young) Skaggs

November 14, 1949 — September 13, 2024

Bluffton

Connie Jean Skaggs, 74, of Bluffton, South Carolina, rose to be with her fellow angels on September 13, 2024.

Born in Ashland, Kentucky in 1949 to Johnnie Marie and Carl Vincel Young, Connie was the second of two daughters to proud parents who loved and adored her for her wit, vivacious sense of humor, and her beauty – both inside and out. Connie lived a life of service, dedicated to the care and healing of others. She graduated with an Associate Degree in Nursing and Registered Nursing licensure from Kings Daughter School of Nursing in Ashland and began her career at Kings Daughter Hospital in 1970. She moved to Irving, Texas to specialize in gynecology, then to Flowood, Mississippi where she was an obstetrician gynecologic triage nurse, before retiring to Bluffton, SC in 2015.

She was an extremely close companion and friend to her sister, Linda Jackson. The two, having lived together for decades, shared all of life’s moments, their faith, and friendship throughout their many happy years together. Friends and family will remember Connie as being a compliment to her sister, whose heart she always carried in her heart, and you would rarely, if ever see one without the other. Connie met her lifelong friend, Sherba Nelson in the eighth grade, and remained a dedicated friend for the next 61 years. God blessed both Sherba and Linda with being present to hold Connie’s hands as she took her last breath and ascended to heaven.

Connie’s eyes and smile lit up every room, her laugh was infectious, and most will agree that her cheesecakes were unparalleled. She carried on a traditional, yet super-secret refrigerator roll recipe, passed onto her by her mother, and in turn, passed it along to her great-niece Morgan Hughes, with whom she shared a special bond through baking. She enjoyed a good martini, Lifetime movies, cooking shows, doing crossword puzzles, travelling, and attending church with her sister. Her intelligence, kindness, thoughtfulness, friendship, positivity, and a million little things that made her a very special person will be greatly missed.

Connie is preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Johnnie, and her niece Kimberly Jackson Walker.

She is survived by her sister Linda, nephew Kevin Jackson (wife Heidi, and great-niece Keegan) of Madison, MS; niece Ally Hughes (husband Hue, great-nephew Jonah, and great-nieces Morgan and Rileigh) of Bluffton, SC; and great-nephew Brayden Barlow, also of Madison, MS, and dozens of friends in her community.

A funeral and celebration of Connie’s life will be held at Church of the Cross, 110 Calhoun St., Bluffton, SC on September 27, at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in her name to Down Syndrome of Louisville, or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
