Dan Martin Mcdonald

March 9, 1949 — March 16, 2017

Dan Martin McDonald, Sr., 68, of the Grahamville community of Ridgeland, SC, passed away on March 16, 2017 peacefully at home. Dan was born in Waukegan, Illinois on March 9, 1949 to the late Dan McDonald and Beulah Poole McDonald. Dan proudly served his Country as a member of the United States Navy, and served during the Vietnam Conflict from 1968 through 1972. Dan retired as an independent insurance adjuster having worked primarily in the aftermath of catastrophes, including many major hurricanes and other natural disasters. While he did not enjoy being away from his family during these times, he received great delight in helping those in need during those tragic times. Dan enjoyed golfing, fishing, reading, and had a passion for music. He most enjoyed sharing his story of having the opportunity to see The Beatles in Shea Stadium in New York in 1965. He especially enjoyed the time he spent as a volunteer for the Jasper-Ridgeland Youth Baseball program as a coach and assistant coach for many years. He had a flair for recognizing the personality and talent of each young person he coached and was able to bring out the best in each of his players. He enjoyed making new acquaintances in his professional and personal life, but most of all, he loved his family. Dan is survived by his wife, Joanne Brown McDonald of Grahamville; his son, Dan Martin McDonald, Jr. of Grahamville; his sister, Mary McDonald Wilson (Clayton) of Grifton North Carolina, his nephew Joel McCraw (Lydia) of Carrizo Springs, Texas, his nieces, Janet Casper Lambert (James) and Stephanie Casper Rouse (Tim); his sister-in-law, Paula Brown Howell and his brother-in-law, Herbert Cecil Howell, Jr., (Herb), of Lexington, South Carolina, his nephew Herbert Cecil Howell, III (Trey) of Charleston, South Carolina and niece Linsy Howell Dooley and her husband Albert J. Dooley, III (Trey) of Lexington, South Carolina and their children Jack and Will Dooley, as well as numerous relatives, nephews, nieces and cousins, all of whom were very special in his life. Dan was predeceased by his parents, his sister Anna McDonald Casper, brother-in-law William “Billy” Casper and several of his favorite aunts and cousins. Memorial services will be held at 7:00 pm, Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at Sauls Funeral Home, 310 W. Adams St., Ridgeland, SC. The family will receive friends beginning at 6:00 pm until the hour of the service at the funeral home.
