A long-time resident of Hilton Head since 1999, Dan passed away peacefully at home on July 8, 2023. He was born in Johnstown, PA on October 9, 1936 to Bernard James Coll and Florence Stutzman Coll. He was preceded in death by his sister Janyce Coll Heininger. He was an avid golfing member in Philadelphia at Manufacturers Golf and Country Club, Belfair C.C. and Moss Creek C.C. in Hilton Head, SC. His last few years were at Riverton Pointe C.C.
Daniel, most loved and beloved husband, father and grandfather is survived by his wife of 61 years, Susan Coyle Coll; son Daniel Jr. (Robin) and grandson Jacob; son Scott (Amy) and granddaughters Lindsay, Kate and Nina; daughter Bonnie (Mike Gehman) and granddaughter Beatrice; daughter Rebecca (Mike Hutner) and granddaughters Brynne, Mackenzie and Grandson Jackson.
Dan served in the Army from 1957-1960 at Fort Devens, MA as a tank commander. Dan was discharged from the Army Reserve in 1963. After his tour of duty at Fort Devens, MA, Dan and his best friend traveled Rte. 66 to California, where he worked for the Calif. Highway Department. After 18 months, he returned to Philadelphia and worked for Leeds and Northrup while attending night school at Temple University. An avid golfer, he joined Oak Terrace C.C. (now Talamore C.C.), where he met the love of his life. After marrying Susan in August 1961, he entered University of Maryland and graduated Cum Laude and received the Wall Street Journal Award in finance. He finished his college education at Temple University with a master’s degree in finance. His first job was with Hunterdon County National Bank in Flemington, NJ. After leaving banking, he had a long career with Smith Kline French (Smith Kline Beecham), where he held the position of assistant treasurer until his retirement in 1991.
Over the years, Dan and Sue’s passion for golf and travel took them to Scotland, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Wales, London, Mexico, and Canada, as well as many courses throughout the United States and the Caribbean islands. The display of golf balls in their home tells the story of the courses they played together. Dan was a diehard Penn State football fan, holding season tickets for 25 years. He so enjoyed many years cheering on the Nittany Lions and tailgating at Beaver Stadium.
Anyone that knew Dan, admired his strong, yet gentle demeanor, competitiveness on the golf course, and his wonderful sense of humor. His love for his family was infallible.
