Daniel Simon de La Penha, M.D., 89 of Bluffton, SC died Sunday, April 8, 2012 at home surrounded by loved ones. He is survived by his loving wife Billie of Bluffton, SC; two devoted daughters Jeanne Van Wicklen of Bluffton, SC and Diane de La Penha Pernick of Columbia, MD; granddaughter Sarah de La Penha Pernick of Washington, DC and grandson Andrew Simon Van Wicklen of Jacksonville, FL; and son-in-law Robert Pernick of Columbia, MD.Daniel de La Penha was born in Atlanta, Georgia on August 12, 1922. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942, serving in the European Theatre of Operations in England, France and Germany. After discharge in 1946 he attended undergraduate school at the University of Georgia, and continued his studies at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, completing an anesthesiology residency in 1953. Upon graduation he partnered with two colleagues and built a thriving anesthesiology practice in Hollywood, Florida, serving several hospitals in the area. After twenty-five years in the operating room he turned the practice over to his younger colleagues and retired to Hilton Head, SC. During a long retirement he enjoyed extensive international travel with Billie, his wife of sixty-three years. Retirement afforded Daniel the time to revive a legal claim that his family had intermittently prosecuted for four centuries. de La Penha
