Dr. David Maurice Hoffman

David M. Hoffman of Bluffton, South Carolina passed away unexpectedly on October 30, 2023 at Friends of Caroline hospice in Bluffton after a very brief illness. David was born in Mercedes, Texas in 1938, grew up in the lower Rio Grande valley of Texas and graduated from Weslaco High School, where he played in the marching band. He attended Pan American College (now UT-Pan American) and received his Bachelor of Science and Masters of Science degrees in Chemistry at Texas Tech University. He earned his PhD in Chemistry from the University of Delaware in 1966, and began his career as a Research Chemist at Sunoco. He later moved to Weston, Connecticut and worked for R.T. Vanderbilt Company in Norwalk, Connecticut until his retirement in 2001. After retiring he moved to South Carolina where he met the love of his life and future wife Paula. He was an avid golfer, a French Horn player, and sang in the church choir throughout his life, most recently at Bluffton United Methodist Church. David was an unassuming man who did not seek the spotlight but had an abundance of common sense. At one time an enthusiastic amateur photographer, he later enjoyed puzzles and once won a cash prize in a national puzzle-solving contest. He and his wife Paula enjoyed hiking and exploring the National Parks. He is survived by his loving wife Paula Hoffman, his son James Hoffman of New York, daughter Julianne Hoffman of Texas, and grandson Alexander Corley of Texas, as well as three step-children and their spouses CB Patterson (Kimberly), Stacey Canaday (Chris), and Amanda Paige (Jeffrey), and 6 step-grandchildren Savannah, Katherine, Caroline, Charlotte, Hayden, and Rowan. A memorial service for David will be held on Thursday, November 9 at the Bluffton United Methodist Church at 1:00. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ASPCA or a charity of your choice.
