David Hall Scott, 65, of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, passed away unexpectedly on October 6, 2026.
A proud native of Westfield, New Jersey, Dave attended Boston University, where he met Elaine, his wife of nearly 40 years. The two married in 1987 and settled in Pearl River, New York, where they raised their four children, Andrew, Angelica, Alexandra, and Anna. Dave built a career in software development and technology as an engineer, consultant, and entrepreneur. A lifelong music lover and talented bass guitarist, he also played in classic rock cover bands in Rockland County and Hilton Head Island, sharing his passion for music with family and friends.
Above all, Dave's greatest pride and joy was his family. A devoted husband and father, he was a steady, reassuring presence who showed his love through the countless ways, both big and small, he cared for those around him. His children knew they could turn to him with any question, whether they needed advice, help solving a problem, or another set of hands for a home improvement project. Quiet and observant by nature, Dave had an easy warmth and understated sense of humor that made everyone feel welcome and at ease.
Becoming "Pop Pop" to his first grandson, Patrick, brought Dave immeasurable happiness. He delighted in their time together, whether reading books, playing, or simply enjoying each other's company. During a family gathering in Hilton Head to celebrate his birthday this past spring, Dave learned that two more grandchildren were on the way. The news filled him with excitement as he looked forward to watching his family grow.
Dave was also his family's unofficial historian, rarely without a camera or video recorder in hand. No moment was too ordinary to capture, and holidays inevitably involved setting up his tripod, often to the playful protests of his children. He documented not only birthdays and milestones but also the everyday experiences that might otherwise have slipped by unnoticed. What once earned him a few eye rolls has become one of his family's most treasured gifts: a lifetime of memories preserved through his eyes, filled with the people and moments he loved most.
In 2019, Dave and Elaine moved to Hilton Head Island, where they embraced a new chapter and built a wonderful circle of friends. Their home became a welcoming gathering place for family and plenty of visitors, and Dave was happiest when surrounded by the people he loved. He enjoyed walking along South Beach, learning to play golf, driving his convertible, and ending the day with a Jack and Coke. With new friendships, interests, adventures, and the joy of a growing family, Dave was embracing this chapter of life with so much still to look forward to.
Dave is survived by his wife, Elaine; his four children, Andrew Scott, Angelica Hackett (Patrick Hackett, Jr.), Alexandra Scott (Vladimir Petrovic), and Anna Scott (Matthew Politis); and his grandson, Patrick Hackett III. He is also survived by his stepmother, Gloria Scott; his brother, Robert Scott (Sherry Scott); and his sister, Nancy Robson (Fraser Robson).
Dave will be remembered for his warmth, gentle humor, boundless curiosity, and the quiet, dependable way he cared for those around him. His greatest legacy is the family he loved so deeply and the example he set in finding joy, purpose, and possibility in every chapter of life. He will be profoundly missed by all who knew and loved him.
A memorial service celebrating Dave's life will be held at Providence Presbyterian Church in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, on Friday, October 16, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family invites those wishing to honor Dave's memory to make a donation to their favorite charity.
