David Collister Tanner

February 1, 1943 — June 6, 2021

David Collister Tanner, 78, of Bluffton, South Carolina, passed away on June 6, 2021 at home after a long illness. He was born on February 1,1943 in Warsaw, New York to the late Maxine (Hadley) and Edward Tanner. David graduated from Ten Broeck Academy in Franklinville, New York in 1961. He received his B.S.degree in chemical engineering from Clarkson University in 1965. He was employed in the steel industry for 43 years.

David is survived by his wife of 55 years; Katharine Alexandra (Sandy) McWilliam. He is also survived by his two daughters; Mary Kate Kilgus (Donald) and Amy Maureen Hepp (Daniel), his brothers, Donald (Patricia), Gordon (Cheryl), Douglas (Linda), Reed (Twila) and his sisters, Miriam Griffith (William dec.) and Melanie Close (Kevin). David is survived by his five grandchildren; Nathan Kilgus and Andrew Kilgus, Jennifer Hepp, Benjamin Hepp and Jane Hepp. He is also survived by many nephews, nieces, and cousins.

David was an avid distance runner, cross country skier, canoeist, kayaker, and outdoorsman. His interests were many and varied, and included everything from caning chairs to building boats and going to the symphony. His enthusiasm for a challenge, whether it was completing a college engineering degree or finishing a marathon, was matchless. But David’s greatest joy was his family.

He was a member of Lowcountry Presbyterian Church, Bluffton, South Carolina.

A memorial service will be held July 7, 2021 11 o’clock am at Lowcountry Presbyterian Church, Bluffton, South Carolina.
