Dieter was born in Mannheim, Germany, on February 8, 1938, and emigrated to the United States in 1951. At the age of 18, he became a US citizen and shortly thereafter, along with his stepfather, founded Boes Manufacturing Incorporated, manufacturers of parts for precision instruments for the aircraft industry. Not only was he extensively involved in Grumman’s F-14 project, he also manufactured moveable components for Disney’ s ‘It’s a Small World’ venue and NASA’s Lunar Module (LEM) for America’s first moon landing.
He came to the United States as a talented soccer player and continued that love through the years by playing in the NYC Semi-pro soccer league. He thoroughly enjoyed watching European soccer games on tv and was thrilled to see Germany win the World Cup in 2014. He loved playing golf and tennis and was Callawassie’s First Men’s Singles Tennis Champion. But he was best at playing the piano and singing. On numerous occasions, he would take the mike during a club event and sing a few or sit down and play the piano.
Dieter’s favorite time of the day was sitting on the back porch in the evening with Carol, listening to Jazz and smoking a cigar. During those porch conversations, he would always say that winding up at Callawassie was beyond his wildest dreams. Since he and his family arrived in the US with almost nothing and speaking no English, he never in a million years imagined that living in a community such as this would be a possibility. He loved Callawassie and regularly said how much he wanted people to know how happy he was.
Carol Boes and the Boes children, Kerry and Bobby, Brian and Lisa, Greg and Heidi, and Jimmy and Lori, and their children (Brian, Shawn, Alyssa, Bryson, Taylor, Morgan, and Ariana) wish to express their thanks to all who sent prayers, e-mails, cards and offers of assistance. We are eternally grateful.
