Donald L. Shaw, age 89, of Bluffton, SC and formerly of Toledo, OH died Monday, January 11, 2016 at Coastal Carolina Medical Center in Hardeeville, SC. Mr. Shaw was born on June 29, 1926 in New Kensington, PA, the son of the late Homer Otis Shaw and Ruth Edna Deardorff Shaw. Mr. Shaw was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Ferguson Shaw; his second wife, Patricia Walters Shaw; and his sister, Jean Shaw House. He is survived by his daughters, Kathryn Lee DeaKyne (Jeffrey) of Carmel, IN and Carol Ann Deitesfeld (Erik) of Arvada, CO; his four grandchildren Brian DeaKyne, Gregory DeaKyne, Michael DeaKyne and Lee Deitesfeld; six great-grandchildren Matthew, Kathryn, Jamie, Nicholas, Eloise and Amelia; and a special friend, Joann McElravy. He was a 1951 graduate of Purdue University where he earned a degree in civil engineering. At Purdue, he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon where he served as Vice President and Treasurer. He was a World War II veteran, serving with the United States Marine Corps where he was an expert sharpshooter. He was part of the occupation forces during peacetime in Japan. Mr. Shaw had a 40-year engineering career in the fiberglass industry. He ended his career as Vice President of a consulting firm working throughout the world. While working at Gustin-Bacon Manufacturing Company, he was the founding President of the employee credit union. Outside of work, he enjoyed traveling extensively, golf, reading, classical music, and yoga. Mr. Shaw was an avid curler; while in Bowling Green, Ohio, he served as President, Treasurer and the oldest curler in the club. In 2002, Mr. Shaw and his wife Patty moved to Bluffton, SC, where they shared many happy years in the Sun City community. He remained active in the community after Patty’s death. A good joke, big smile, and hearty laugh were ever present when Don was on the scene. A celebration of Don’s life will be Saturday, February 13, at 11 a.m. at Sauls Funeral Home, 90 Simmonsville Road, Bluffton, SC 29910.
