Donald W. Zellar
Donald Zellar, 91, of Sun City, died Tuesday, June 30, 2015 at National HealthCare (NHC) in Bluffton. He was born September 25, 1923, in Plano, Illinois. Don attended the University of Illinois before enlisting in the Army Air Corps in March 1943, becoming part of the "Greatest Generation." Don was stationed in Molesworth, England as part of the 8th Air Force where he successfully completed 35 combat missions. Shortly after his honorable discharge from the military, Don married his college sweetheart, Ruth Thomason, on December 28, 1945.
Don began his career working for Sherwin Williams and AC Nielson. His career steadily advanced upon employment with Oscar Meyer in Chicago, Illinois and a division of Johnson & Johnson in Raritan Valley, New Jersey. He successfully concluded his career as Vice President and General Manager with the Bob Evans Farms Corporation in Hillsdale, Michigan.
Don retired to Orlando, Florida, where he and his wife Ruth lived for more than twenty-five years. Don was an avid golfer, traveler, and made many friends wherever he went. Don and Ruth moved to South Carolina in 2001. Family was of great importance to Ruth and Don.
Don was a member of the Lowcountry Presbyterian Church in Bluffton and St. Luke's Methodist Church in Orlando, Florida. He is survived by two children, Ronald (Conni) Zellar of Sun City and Mimi (Brian) Sturgell of Kiawah Island, South Carolina; three grandchildren Laurie Sturgell (Nathan) Knowles, Stacey Sturgell (Matt) Iofredo and Ryan (Natasha) Zellar; and four great-grandchildren Cooper Knowles, Molly Knowles, Reagan Iofredo and Riley Iofredo. His loving wife of more than 69 years, Ruth (Thomason) Zellar, preceded him in death by 23 days. He was also preceded in death by his mother, Mary Eula (Williams) Toombs, step-father William Toombs, his aunt and uncle Myrl and Earl Grimes, and grandmother Ida Williams.
