On March 1, 2023, Donna Rae Hudson succumbed to a brief illness, passing from this earth, while surrounded by people who loved her dearly.
She was born on March 5, 1950, in Atlanta, GA. She was predeceased by her parents, George R. Hudson of New York, and Nell Davis Hudson of Savannah. She is survived by her two sisters, Marie Hudson Lowther of Ridgeland, SC and Linda Hudson Lawson (Billy) of Savannah, GA, nieces April Lowther, Mallory Lawson and Kitt Lowther, and a nephew Clay Lowther. She was predeceased by her niece English Lowther. In addition, she leaves two great-nephews, Wyatt Davis and Jackson Lowther. She dearly loved and was devoted to them all.
She was a communicant of The Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist in Savannah.
Donna taught first grade in the Jasper County Public Schools for 38 years until she retired in 2011. Everywhere she went, people approached her, “Miss Hudson, do you remember me?” Her family was amazed that she remembered them all. She had taught them, and in many cases their children. She taught hundreds of our children to read. It was never a job to her. She gave them the best education she could and was always willing to reach out to any child in need, be it clothing, counseling, or extra help. She would never hesitate to spend her own money on special supplies. None did without if Miss Hudson was able to provide.
After she retired, for as long as she was able, she donated her time as a volunteer and continued to support school-sponsored projects. In her lifetime she mentored her nieces and nephews, checked on their grades, provided help and gave incentive along the way.
One of her own teachers, Mrs. Annette Cooler, became a lifelong friend. She loved Annette, her children, and grandchildren as if they were her own.
Visitation will be March 14, 2023, 10:00 am – 12:00 pm at Sauls Funeral Home in Ridgeland, SC with graveside to follow immediately after at Ridgeland Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, Donna would ask that you donate your time and money to local school children. Read to a child and open their world. You may also make donations to America’s Second Harvest.
