Doret Lynn Tookey (Cunis) passed away on Friday, September 5 at the age of 81. For those who knew and loved her, our hearts are shattered. She was born in Oak Park, IL on February 1, 1944, and raised in Norwood Park in Chicago, IL. by her parents Robert and Hjordis Cunis. Doret graduated from Taft High School in 1961 where she met the love of her life and future husband, Bob Tookey, in typing class. She went on to pursue her degree in Education, of which she was rightfully so proud of, from Miami University (Oxford, OH). Doret and Bob married on March 9, 1968, in Norwood Park, Chicago.
Doret and Bob started their beautiful life together in Chicago before moving to San Francisco, CA and then to Pittsburgh, PA. They eventually settled in Hermitage, PA where they raised their three wonderful children Robert (Paula), Michael (Kelly), and Dana (William Trumbull). It was also in Hermitage that Doret retired from her teaching career at Hickory High School. Prior to that, many students benefited from having her as their English teacher as she taught in Half Day, IL, and Walnut Creek, CA. For the past sixteen years, Doret and Bob have resided in Hardeeville, South Carolina, where they enjoyed the beautiful beaches, golf courses, and company of so many incredible friends.
Doret had many passions in life, but the titles of Mom, Toots, and Grandma were her most treasured. In addition to her husband and children, she is survived by her six loving grandchildren: Jackson, Charlie, Tate, Talee, Bubba, and Beau. To say she was proud of her family was an understatement.
Always ready with a quick one-liner, a great piece of advice, a comforting message, or a funny story, Doret will be missed beyond measure by her friends and family. She loved her family more than life itself - making sure she celebrated every little thing for each of her grandchildren. Whether it was a video message singing Happy Birthday, a text message to say good job at a game, a trip to the playground, or a million other ways she showed her love, Doret excelled at making her family feel special and celebrated all the time.
In addition to her devotion to her family, Doret loved to travel, especially with her dear friends. Most recently, she visited Norway and experienced the country where her grandparents were born. She loved to read and was an active member of her community. She served on the board of Children's Center of Mercer County (previously named Crippled Children) where Dana attended preschool. She also participated in book clubs and several charities.
Her impact is immeasurable. When we toast with a glass of Chardonnay, play a round of Mexican Train, go crabbing at South Beach, read a great book, make Chex Mix, plan an exciting adventure, or celebrate our successes - Doret will be there with us. She will be in our hearts, our souls, our laughter, and our tears. Forever, Doret will be with us.
We will be celebrating her beautiful life on November 8 at Jack’s Place, Riverton Pointe neighborhood Hardeeville, SC.
