Doris Davis Edwards

Doris Davis Edwards, 102, of Hilton Head Island, SC died Wednesday, September 30, 2015 at Brookdale Palm Village. Mrs. Edwards was born on August 21, 1913 in Jacksonville, FL, the daughter of the late Frank H. Schwarz and Helen Neve Schwarz. She held a number of jobs before and during World War II, but afterward she went in banking, beginning her career with South Carolina National Bank in Charleston, SC and ultimately with Liberty National Bank in Savannah, GA which she left upon her marriage to her second husband. She was a lifelong Catholic and member of St. Francis by the Sea Catholic Church. Mrs. Edwards was preceded in death by her husbands, George Caulder Davis and William Hudson Edwards, Sr.; sister, Helen Harris and brothers, Courtney, Milton and Frank Schwarz. She is survived by her daughter, Jane Hester and son-in-law Robert of Bluffton, SC; sister, Marjorie Ogilvie and brother-in-law John of Ft. Myers, FL; grandchildren, Ansley Manuel (Vernon "Tripp") and Robert Joseph Hester, Jr. (Brooke); three great-granddaughters; and numerous nieces and nephews and their children and grandchildren. Shortly after her birth the family returned to Savannah, GA where she attended Massie School and graduated from Savannah High School. From a young girl and into to her twenties she attended Alicia Baran's School of Dance, where she exceled. During her life Doris was known for her love and devotion to her family. She enjoyed tennis, golf and reading. She adored following her favorite football and baseball teams and was particularly devoted to the Atlanta Braves. Known for her meticulous housekeeping she was also fond of classical music and art. Her sharp mind stayed with her well into her late 90's and even during the last years her comments could make you laugh. The family will be receiving friends from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 7, 2015 at her daughter's residence. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, October 8, 2015 at St. Francis by the Sea Catholic Church, 45 Beach City Road, Hilton Head Island, SC 29926. A private burial will take place at Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, GA at a later date. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Food for the Poor, any Catholic parish of choice, the Salvation Army, or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
