Dr. Dorothy Eleanor Fall

Dr. Dorothy Eleanor Fall, 78, resident of Hilton Head Island, SC, passed away Wednesday, August 16, 2023 at Hilton Head Hospital.

Dorothy was born February 4, 1945 in Havre de Grace, MD to the late James Huey Fall, Jr. and Blanche Cecelia Johnson Fall. She graduated from Lake Erie College and attended the University of Valencia, Spain (Winter Term Abroad Program, 1966). She received her Master’s Degree in Education from Westfield State, Westfield, MA and her Doctorate in Education from Nova Southeastern University, Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

Dorothy held many positions in education throughout her lifetime. She began her teaching career in Ohio, later moving on to positions in Texas, North Carolina, Massachusetts, and DOD schools in the Republic of the Philippines. Following her years in Elementary Education, she became employed at Mount Holyoke College and Shenandoah University as a Lecturer. She then worked as an Adjunct Professor of Education at Mary Baldwin, Staunton, VA and as a Librarian at Loudon Country Day School of Leesburg, VA for 19 years, before retiring. Throughout her career, Dorothy received several awards, such as the Thomas G. Jewel Chair in Language Arts, the All Star Community Service Initiative Award, and Teacher of the Year. She was a member of the Board of Directors for the Loudon County Volunteer Services, a member of the American Library Association, and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.

Dorothy is survived by her sister-in-law, Marsha W. Fall of Hilton Head Island; nephews, James H. Fall, IV, currently on assignment in Japan, and Tyler S. Fall of Laramie, Wyoming; and grandnieces, Emma Fall, Margaret Fall, and Charlotte Fall. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Shelton, and her brother, James H. Fall, III.

A private burial will take place in Locust Field Cemetery in Canton, NC at a later date.
