Dorothy “Dottie” Tanner, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones on March 10, 2026. Dottie was truly extraordinary women whose kindness, warmth, and loving spirit touched everyone who had the privilege of meeting her.
Born in Fairfax, Virginia, she was the beloved daughter of the late Myron Cupp and Frances Stover Thorne. From an early age, she possessed a gentle and compassionate nature and carried a song in her heart that would define the way she lived her life. Dottie held several jobs during her career from singer to telephone operator to accounting clerk. Her favorite jobs by far were that of wife, mother and grandmother.
Dottie shared more than 55 beautiful years of marriage with her husband, Charles, building a life together rooted in enduring love, loyalty and family.
She was a deeply devoted mother to her children, Michael and Laurie, who were the center of her world. She supported them in every stage of life, always putting their needs before her own and standing beside them with unwavering love, encouragement, and pride. Being a mother was one of her greatest joys. Her joy grew even greater when she became a grandmother to Grayson and Ellie. Her grandchildren brought immense happiness to her life and she cherished every moment spent with them. She was present at nearly every sporting event, awards assembly and Grandparent’s Day celebration, never missing a milestone moment for either of her grandchildren. Known for her kind heart and gentle welcoming spirit, she lived her life putting others first, offering kindness, comfort and support whenever needed. “To the world, you were a mother. To your family, you were the world.”
Those left behind to cherish her memory include her husband Charles; her children, Michael (Shelly) and Laurie (Dan); her grandchildren, Grayson and Ellie as well as Rachel (Roger) Tian and Gracie Rorie.
The love she shared with her family and friends will remain a lasting legacy. She will be forever cherished and deeply missed by all who knew her. We will forever carry her love and legacy in her hearts.
