Dr. Guy Matthews

Dr. Guy Matthews of Bluffton, SC died on May 10, 2026, in his home on the beautiful and peaceful May River. He was born on February 17, 1951, surprisingly in an ambulance on Route 66, but Barstow, California is listed as his official birthplace. His parents Rob Matthews Sr. and Mary Jane (nee Steele) Matthews are both deceased. The young military family moved often and settled in Beaufort, SC in 1957. Guy attended public schools, graduated from Beaufort High in 1969 and went on to attend Florida State University on a ROTC scholarship, finishing magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. From there he earned a dental degree at MUSC in Charleston, married a classmate Dr. Susan Snow, and together they served in the US Army Dental Corps in Stuttgart, Germany and Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Following military service in 1980 the couple established Bluffton’s very first dental practice and worked “side-by-side” as Dr. Guy and Dr. Susan until their retirement in 2009.

In addition to his wife Susan of nearly 52 years, Dr. Matthews is survived by: his son Roger Matthews and wife Alisha and their two children Poppy and Evan, all of Darien, GA; his brother Rob Matthews Jr. and wife Joan of Hardeeville, SC; a sister Mary Alice Johnson and Tom Porter of Fernandina Beach, FL; his younger brother Roy Matthews and wife Patricia of Eureka, CA; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am, Monday, June 8, 2026 at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 351 Buckwalter Parkway, Bluffton SC 29909. Burial will follow at 2:00 pm in Beaufort National Cemetery, 1601 Boundary Street, Beaufort, SC.  A Celebration of Life will be planned at a later date.
