He was born in Grays, SC on June 19, 1928 to the late Eddie Smith and Frances Owen Smith.He was employed at Westinghouse, Willock Horton Builders and was a self employed painter. He was a member of Red Dam Baptist Church and was a Scottish Rite 32nd Degree Mason of Stafford Lodge in Furman, SC.He is survived by his wife, Becky Smith of Hardeeville, SC; one son, Ralph Smith of Ridgeland, SC; four daughters, Joyce (Ray) Burnette of Grays, SC; Judy (Bob) Mitchem of Grays, SC; Myra (Freddie) Malphrus of Ridgeland, SC; Roni Smith of Varnville, SC; one stepson, Robert (Meredith) Walls of Hardeeville, SC; one stepdaughter, Amy (Mitchell) Ambrose of Rincon, GA; seventeen grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren and one great great grandson; two sisters, Travis (Thomas) Terry of Blackville, SC and Leadria Terry of Hardeeville, SC; two nieces and one nephew. He was preceded in death by his former wife, Margeret Padgett Smith; his daughter Pam Etheridge and granddaughter, Tina Malphrus.Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Sunday, February 24, 2008 at Red Dam Baptist Church in Hardeeville, SC with burial in the church cemetery. Stafford Masonic Lodge will serve as Honorary Pall bearers with Masonic Graveside Service. Pallbearers will be Chris Smith, Timmy Smith Troy Smoak, Barry Smoak, Harvey Carson and Mitchell Ambrose. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Red Dam Baptist Church Building Fund, PO Box 1339, Hardeeville, SC 29927 or Agape Hospice, 433 First Street, Ridgeland, SC 29936.
