Edgar Hannon Douglas has physically departed “God’s Lowcountry” as of Saturday, September 10, 2016. He was 69 years young. His final days were filled with adventure, happiness, and laughter as his wonderful Beth replaced his uncertainties and fears with her unending positive self and strength. Edgar was born May 25, 1947. The second son and child of Jane Steele Hannon and Stephen Arnold Douglas in Greensboro, NC. His father was born and died on the fourth of July and perished in his own airplane at age 33. Edgar was six weeks old. He, his brother Stephen Arnold Douglas VI, and their mother returned to her home town of Charlotte. Edgar was educated at Phillips Academy, Andover, MA and the Asheville School for Boys before attending East Carolina University, The University of North Carolina and The University of South Carolina where he was honored to be selected Grand Master of Kappa Sigma Social Fraternity and a member of the Greek Council. He came to Hilton Head in 1976, working for the newly opened Hyatt Hotel in Palmetto Dunes before joining the Sea Pines staff at the William Hilton Inn in food and beverage and group sales, caring for customers such as Tracy Austin and Henry Kissenger. It was there one of his groups, American Broadcasting Company (ABC) asked him to join their front running advance conference planning squads. What wonderful places he visited and incredible events attended!! The Breakers at Palm Beach, the Winter Olympics at Lake Placid!!! Many of us mistakenly asked about the “Miracle on Ice” and were concerned for an hour!! The constant travel was replaced by the peace and pace of Daufuskie Island as Director of Service for Haig Point Plantation, then Resident manager of Freeport Marina and lastly as the food and beverage supervisor for The Melrose; The Latter being the perfect union! A group of the members actually named a golf tournament “The Edgar Tournament” which was an annual event for eight years until the resort closed. Other members produced a book, Edgar, A Daufuskie Legend. He so loved his members, who were among his favorite things, along with leading the Hilton Head St. Paddy’s Day Parade for 21 years, also explaining the Lincoln-Douglas Debates to the children at Hilton Head Elementary school, being the Christmas Elf in the Daufuskie parade, describing the puppies treeing the heavy weight champion of the world, Leon Sphinx doing his road work on a Sea Pines Golf Course, explaining his Alien abduction to the non-believers, philosophizing with Bobby and the Dook, or just telling whoopers on the golf course! What will truly be missed will be simply criss crossing his beloved Daufuskie family seated in a golf cart with his precious wife and life Beth. He hasn’t left, he’s just watching over Daufuskie.
