Edmond Porter Martin passed away on Thursday, December 5th, 2024, at the age of 84 after a year and a half long battle with cancer. He was the son of the late William and Mildred Martin of Hyde Park, Massachusetts. He graduated Hyde Park High School with the class of 1958. He also lived in Stoughton, MA while raising his two children with his first wife Andrea Young (Martin) then to Warwick, RI where he met and married his second wife Patricia Louise Petit (Martin). He and Patricia eventually retired together to Sun City Hilton Head South Carolina where he passed away.
After high school while working in a sheet metal shop Ed was taking drafting classes at Franklin Institute of Technology in the evenings which led him to a career with Stone and Webster an engineering firm in Boston. He traveled to many nuclear power plants around the U.S. working on piping design and quality control. After many years he moved on to become a contractor in the same field and landed at Hoescht Celanese now Clariant a chemical production company in Rhode Island where he met Pat.
When Ed and Pat retired to South Carolina it started an exciting chapter in both their lives. Traveling abroad, joining social clubs and activity groups in Sun City, and family visits back up north. Ed and Pat were members of Town Square Upbeats in Sun City for almost 25 years. Ed was the President of that club for 12 of those years. Every Friday was a new activity or adventure for the group at Pickney Hall. The events included cookouts, Oktoberfest, sandwich nights, and clambakes. He loved telling stories of the previous Dinner Dances, Toys for Tots drives, and how proud he was of the relationships he had built with the Marines over the years. The annual Toys for Tots fundraiser collected thousands of toys and hundreds of bikes in Ed’s twelve-year tenure.
He was a member, floor manager and instructor at the woodworking club alongside his brothers Robert and Richard.
He is survived by his wife Patrica Martin, his son Scott Martin and his wife Didem of Easton, MA and his daughter Pamela Demers and her husband Dennis of Fairbanks, Alaska. His only surviving sibling, Robert Martin, is also of Sun City SC. His late former wife Andrea and his brothers Richard and Phillip Martin are no longer with us.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Ed’s life in late February in South Carolina and in April in Massachusetts. Dates, times and locations to be posted later. If you would like to get a note to the family, please email Ed’s email at edpmartin71@gmail.com .
