Edward Peter Kennedy Sr.

Edward Peter Kennedy, Sr. passed away at the age of ninety nine at his residence in Bluffton, South Carolina on October 14, 2022. Born March 6, 1923, in Summerton, South Carolina, he was the child of the late Annie Ada Chewning and George Dargan Kennedy, also of Summerton. “Ed Pete” was a graduate of Clemson University, Class of 1944; his graduation was delayed until 1946, as he saw service in the Philippines late in World War II. He remained an avid Tiger fan, and outdoorsman, and loved his family, especially his grandchildren. He loved salt water fishing and deer hunting at “Tara”. Ed was an engineer and long time plant manager for Engineered Products (Gower Manufacturing) of Greenville, South Carolina.

Ed was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by his wife, the former Mary Louise Magarahan, of Anderson, South Carolina; two sisters, Statia Thompson, of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, and Helen Detwiler, of Summerton; his second and sixth children, Julia Anne Kennedy and Frances Dargan Kennedy Freeman Nicholson; and a grandson, Joshua Peter Kennedy.

Survivors include his son, Edward Peter “Pete” (Sharon) Kennedy, Jr., of Columbia; three daughters; Patricia Anne (Ed) Hughes, of Hilton Head; Mary Claudia (Don) O’Steen, of Bluffton; Maureen Louise (Tommy) Bryant, of Franklin, Tennessee; son in law, Lee Floyd Nicholson, of Greenville; nine grandchildren; Terry Lynn (Cynthia) Kennedy, of Greensboro, North Carolina; Shannon Michelle Kennedy (Stuart) Holwadel, of Beaufort, South Carolina, Bryan Kennedy (Leslie) Hughes, of Hilton Head; Elizabeth Magarahan Hughes (Logan) Ray, of Charleston; Patrick Donald O’Steen, of Orange Beach, Alabama; Mary Catherine O’Steen (Ed) Smith, of Athens, Georgia; Thomas Haydock “Hayes” (Sarah) Bryant, of Nashville; McCall Kennedy Bryant (Jay) Lurie, of Nashville, William Palmer Freeman, of Athens, Georgia; and fifteen great grandchildren.

Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, in Greenville, South Carolina. Arrangements at this time are incomplete. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Evergreen Cemetery, to be sent to Ellen Ardis, P. O. Box 366, Summerton, South Carolina 29148.
