Effie Kay Moon

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” Psalm 34:18

Effie Kay Moon made an earthly transition at her home on September 8, 2025. She saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, …” Revelation 21:4.

Effie was born to the late Alvin and Eura Jones, of Rustburg, VA on December 8, 1939. She was the eighth of twelve children. She moved to Hartford, CT with her sister, Martha Marie Clarke, and graduated from Campbell County High School and from New Hampshire College in 1982. She met and married Herbert H. Lewis and to this union three children were born, Mark, Anthony, and Tara. Herbert Lewis made his transition from his early home in 2003.

Effie was employed by the Department of Housing in Hartford, CT, as an Executive Secretary to the Commissioner. She was dedicated to her work.

Effie reunited with high school sweetheart, Thurman Moon. In 2005, they were joined in holy matrimony. They remained a loving and devoted couple until her transition. They were an integral part of the Sun City, Bluffton Community. Her hobbies included golfing, watching jeopardy, and collecting clocks. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Effie was a Christian and lifelong church member. Her early years of biblical teaching came from New Free Springs Baptist Church in Rustburg, VA, then Shiloh Baptist in Hartford, CT and finally Campbell Chapel in Bluffton, SC. At Campbell she has been the administrative assistant to five pastors and gave excellent service. She was a member of many boards and auxiliaries, steward emeritus, stewardship and finance commission, church school, bible study, lay organization, Women’s Missionary Society and the president of the Couple’s Ministry.

Effie was a member of several organizations which included by not limited to the Circlets, which she was a chartered member and president, SWAP (Sisters with a Purpose), CHUMs and DAV (Disable American Veterans) Women’s Auxiliary.

Effie Kay Moon was preceded in death by her loving parents, Alvin and Eura Jones; one son, Mark Everette Lewis; and seven siblings: Charles Jones, Nathan Jones, Martha Marie Clarke, Earna Loretta Clarke, Curtis Jones, Barry Jones and Annette Jones. She leaves to cherish her memories, a devoted and loving husband, Thurman Moon, a son, Anthony (Nancy) Lewis, a daughter, Tara (Susan) Lewis both of Hartford County CT; two blended family children; Dexter Vincent (Lottie) Moon, San Antonio, TX and their children and grandchildren; and Aleasea Kimberly (Emanuel) Batts of Phoenix, AR and their children; six Grandchildren: Mark Everette Lewis II, Anissa Paige Lewis, Victoria Jade Lewis, Anthony Grant Lewis, Nicole Alexis Lewis and Cameron James Lewis; two great-grandchildren: Mel Ethan Lewis and Sophia Monet Lewis; four siblings: Waddell Gerald (Geneva) Jones of Gladys, VA, Audrey Ray (Naomi) Jones of Gladys, VA, Dwight (Gladys) Jones of Rustburg, VA, Linda (Welford) Wood of Evington, VA, and Linwood (Georgia) Jones of Brookneal, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
