Elizabeth Ann Shearman

Elizabeth Shearman, age 96, of Sparta, NJ, passed away on March 16, 2023 at her daughter’s home in Bluffton, SC. She was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY and spoke often of the wonderful memories she had of her youth. After high school, she worked as a stenographer and later taught that skill at a business school in Hacksensack, NJ.

Elizabeth was predeceased by the love of her life, Robert Shearman, two sisters, Kathleen Tobin and Helen Gaul, her brother, Matthew Tobin, two of her sons, Gregory and Philip, her granddaughter, Michaela Shearman, and her step-grandson, Avi Maharaj. She is survived by her sister, Regina Touhey, her three sons, John and his wife Anne, Mark and his wife Linda, and Robert and his wife Eileen. She is also survived by her two daughters, Elizabeth Hofgesang and Kathleen Arpaia and her husband Steven; and two daughters-in-law, Indira and Gail.

Elizabeth and Robert raised their seven children in Merrick, Long Island, NY and Haworth, NJ. Until last year she had been living with her daughter in Sparta, NJ.

Betty, as she was known by her friends, loved spending time with her 14 grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and two step great-grandchildren.

During her time in Bluffton, SC, Betty won the hearts of many with her bright smile, good sense of humor, and her warm, inviting, positive attitude toward life. She will be greatly missed by many.
