Eugene (Gene) Correll Dix, of Sun City Hilton Head, SC, passed away peacefully on September 30, 2024 at the age of 97. Gene was born in Worcester, MA on March 18, 1927 to Albert H. and Blanche Correll Dix. Gene was predeceased by his wife of 69 years, Ann Schuster Dix and by his son Winfield Schuster Dix. Gene is survived by his daughter, Sandra Jack, her husband Thomas and their daughter, Sarah; his son Wendell Dix, his wife Deanna and their daughter Mackenzie and son Travis; and by his daughter-in-law, Patty Dix and her son Kasey Dix. Gene attended Mount Hermon school where he lettered in soccer, hockey and lacrosse. Gene enlisted in the Navy during World War II, then completed high school at New Hampton School (1948) where he played on the varsity soccer, ice hockey and golf teams. He graduated from Middlebury College in 1952 where he organized and played on the school’s first lacrosse team, was elected to the Men’s Assembly and was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. In 1953, Gene graduated from Clark University’s School of Geography where he was elected to the Honorary Geographic Society Gamma Theta Epsilon. Gene began his career with the American Agricultural Chemical Company mining phosphate in Polk County, Florida. He then spent the remainder of his career in the woolen industry where he held successive executive positions with Hayward-Schuster Woolen Mills of East Douglas, MA and New York, NY. Gene was a member of the Northern Textile Association and a Director of Woolens and Worsteds of America.

In 1954 Gene married Ann and while living in New York City they were members of the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church. After 4 years, they moved to Princeton, NJ to raise their family. Gene was active in the First Presbyterian Church, was committee chairman of the Boy Scouts of America Troop #50, coached hockey with the Princeton Pee Wee Hockey Club and was an active member of Springdale Golf Club. Returning to East Douglas, MA in the 1980’s, Gene spent time in Ashfield, MA where he enjoyed hunting, cross country skiing, hiking and playing golf at the Quinnetisset Golf Club (Putnam, CT), Pleasant Valley Country Club (Whitinsville, MA), and the Ashfield and Worthington Golf Clubs in Massachusetts. Gene also skated for 10 years with the Rhode Island Old Timers Hockey Club. In 1995, Gene moved to Sun City Hilton Head where Gene enjoyed his life-long passion of playing golf and worked as a ranger and starter at the Crescent and Eagle Point Golf Clubs. Gene reluctantly gave up playing at the age of 95 because he could not hit as far as he wished.
