Evelyn Bird Ewing Glass

January 26, 1929 — April 19, 2022

Evelyn Bird Ewing Glass, 93, of Bluffton, SC, passed away peacefully April 19, 2022, in her daughter’s home, surrounded by members of her family.

Evelyn was born in Milton, KY, January 26, 1929. She was the youngest of 6 children, and the family spent many happy years along the Ohio River. She attended the University of Kentucky where she met her husband, Harry Bishop Glass. They married in 1948, and jitterbugged their way through life. They first lived in Lexington, Kentucky where all four children were born. In 1961, they relocated to Morristown, Tennessee, moved to Greeneville, Tennessee in 1974, and returned to Morristown in 1978. She designed and built her dream house there, living in it until they retired in 2005 to the Riverbend neighborhood of Sun City Hilton Head, South Carolina.

Evelyn was well-traveled and a woman of many talents. If there was a craft she didn’t conquer or a painting or drawing method she didn’t try or a sewing skill she didn’t master, we didn’t know about it. Her drawings and paintings hang in the homes of her children and friends. She built a smocking design business, Evelyn Ewing Glass Originals, creating and marketing original patterns and smocking plates. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren wore many of her designs, and one of her original smocked ornaments was chosen to decorate a White House Christmas tree. Her sewing skills were utilized in making costumes for many theater productions in Morristown and Greeneville. Her talents included playing guitar and singing in a ladies’ folk group in Morristown, where she was known for tailoring song lyrics to include names and anecdotes about their audiences. She was president of the PTA in her children’s schools, a member of the Embroiderer’s Guild of America and the Smocking Arts Guild of America and was also inducted into the Daughters of the American Revolution. Though she spent many years in Tennessee, her heart always belonged to Kentucky. She was given the honorable title of Kentucky Colonel, and she often said she bled “Kentucky blue.” “My Old Kentucky Home” filled her with joy, and whenever she heard it played, she would stand and put her hand over her heart.

Evelyn was an avid reader and student of the Bible, teaching many Bible studies and Sunday School lessons over the years. She had a vast knowledge of the Bible and a passion for her Savior Jesus Christ. When she could no longer see due to macular degeneration, she often listened to the Bible and spent many hours in prayer for her family, friends, and acquaintances. Even at her assisted living facility, the Palmettos of Bluffton, she could be found praying with the aides or residents. She was a friend, mentor and confidante to many.

She is preceded in death by her husband Harry Bishop Glass, her parents Goldie Bird Ewing and Christopher Leroy Ewing, and her siblings Rhema Ewing Mitchell, Betty Ewing Tandy, John Leroy Ewing, Carroll Merlin Ewing, and Nelda Ewing Cannon. She is survived by her children David Ewing Glass (Judith), Douglas Williamson Glass (Mary Jane), Amy Glass Allen (Mike), and Laura Glass Fay (Wes), as well as grandchildren Christopher Glass (Hartley), Aaron Glass (Heather), Emily Allen Bailey (Chris), Stephen Allen, Brian Fay (Savy), and Sarah Fay, plus great-grandchildren William Glass, Virginia Glass, Carter Glass, Hudson Glass, Neilan Glass, Noah Bailey, and Anna Bailey.
