Evelyn Bergan Meeder

Our beloved wife and mother, Evelyn Bergan Meeder, passed on May 29, 2023, at the age of 95. She lived a large life filled with big smiles, loud laughs, and always kind words.

Born on September 28, 1927 in Butler PA, Evelyn was the oldest of three girls born to Ambrose and Dewreatha Gilchrist Bergan.  Evelyn entered Geneva College at age 16 and earned degrees in Mathematics and Chemistry.  She then began a 5 year teaching career, and a stint as a Rosie the Riveter in San Diego in 1952, before marrying her surviving husband of 69 years, Merle, and becoming a mother to her heart’s greatest joys, her sons Arthur Thomas Meeder and David Bergan Meeder.  Being the ever supportive wife and mother, and involvement in numerous community organizations and activities, fulfilled her endless energy and zest for life.   When her youngest son entered high school, Evelyn began what grew into a dynamic real estate career in both Louisville, KY and Bluffton, SC.   Evelyn excelled and loved her interactions with so many people, developing lifelong clients and numerous friendships.  She was at the top of the game for many, many years and finally retired from active selling at age 90.

Affectionately known as Lady Evelyn, the “title” came from her timeless manners, impeccable attire, never uttering a foul word, and always putting others first.  Grace and Dignity were her core values.

A fiercely competitive person, Evelyn and Merle loved to win at games, especially Bridge.  She would often say, “We Meeders are not very good winners, and we are especially bad losers!”

Evelyn is survived by her husband, her two sons, her two sisters, Mary Grossett and Claire Hughes, 3 grandchildren, JD, Rebecca and Allison Meeder, as well as 2 great-grandchildren, Nora and Jack Meeder. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

The family will receive friends beginning at 11:30 am until 12:30 pm, Monday, June 26, 2023 at Sauls Funeral Home, 90 Simmonsville Rd, Bluffton. A graveside service at Beaufort Memorial Cemetery will be held at a future date to celebrate the life of Evelyn.
